Amish education: After eight years in school, plain life begins with service to community

By the flicker of a candle or lantern, children gather textbooks and lunch pails for their morning journey down country roads to primitive schoolhouses.
Ohio and Pennsylvania are home to 179,000 Amish, all of whom are expected to end their formal studies after the eighth grade so they can return to their families and begin full-time contributions within the community.
