Question #4: If an English woman wears a skirt when she is in the presence of the Amish, does this make a difference?
If an English woman wears a skirt when she is in the presence of the Amish, does this make a difference?
- Yes, wearing a skirt does make a difference simply because dress code among the Amish is so important. There is one thing that is even more important than a skirt, though, and that is that a person must be transparent and real.
- Wearing a skirt would bring about more respect to a degree.
- Not to me, but to the Amish it does.
- Amish understand that the English culture is different, and they hold nothing against women who wear pants as long as they are modest; most Amish lose all respect if a woman is immodestly dressed.
- They might have a bit more respect.
- I don't think the skirt would make any difference, but if an English woman is dressed very classy or with a lot of makeup, the Amish might be somewhat uncomfortable and more closed off. I would say the best way an English person could make a good impression is to be real, open, and friendly and take an interest in what the Amish are doing.
- A woman would probably be more acceptable to the Amish in a skirt.
- To see a woman wearing a skirt because of us caused us to think we had saved that woman from making the mistake of wearing pants, but we still knew that she would be under the influence of technology and conveniences.
- She would be generally looked at as at least trying to follow Bible teaching.
- It would have made me respect her more because I would have thought she must be more Godly to realize she should dress like a woman and not like a man.
- I wouldn't have made any difference to me!
- Somewhat, but she would still be judged by the Amish.
- Most dress code as an English Person amongst the Amish are acceptable. Of course, they’d prefer skirts over pants because they don’t believe woman should wear pants.
- It absolutely does; dressing modestly is the first thing that validates a woman in the eyes of the Amish.
- I never really had any thoughts about English dresscode when I was Amish.
- Yes, it makes a big difference.
- Yes, absolutely. A woman having her hair up in a bun and a very modest top would make a big difference too.
- Probably not since her skirt will wouldn't be according to the standards.
- It depends on the Amish person. Many times, it would make a difference. If the Amish think she’s wearing a skirt just so that she can preach at them, it would probably alienate them.
- Yes, wearing a skirt would raise their respect for her.
- No, not for me it didn’t.
- Not necessarily, although my wife still wears skirts.
- It does more so in lower, stricter Amish orders.
- They would look approvingly on her for her modesty.
- For most Amish, I think wearing a skirt would probably make a difference.
- Yes, wearing a skirt would show respect. We were not used to ladies having such tight jeans.
- They accept me very well, and I don't wear skirts.
- No, anybody who is not Amish is considered a heathen whether they are wearing a skirt or not.
- Maybe with some, but with many, regardless of what she is wearing, she is still of the world.
- I would say no, because their skirts would typically still be colorful and appear as worldly.
- They may think that she’s trying to respect them or maybe that they, as Amish, have really been a good example to her. As far as the Amish being open to what she says because she is in a skirt instead of jeans, I would say that it doesn’t make that much of a difference.
- Typically, all English are put in the same category, however, if they dress moderately, and without a lot of makeup and jewelry, the Amish feel they could be more relaxed.
- If the difference you are looking for is more credibility, then yes, I think wearing a skirt does make a difference.
- Amish women wear clothes that cover most of their body including sleeves and long skirts. They would definitely be more comfortable with "English" women who follow the same standards of modesty as much as possible. If it's a skirt that is short (above the knees) and tight, that would not be helpful. In that case, loose pants would be more acceptable.
- Think of yourself visiting a primitive tribe where people wear less clothes than you would think modest or acceptable and how you would feel. This will give you an idea of how plain people feel in the presence of "English" people who have different standards of dress. Yes, they are somewhat used to seeing the "English" culture, but they definitely are more comfortable with people who use similar standards in dress.
- She would still be considered "of the world." Although there would be more hope for her in a skirt than in pants. Also, there was the idea that if she was sincere and practiced what she was taught in her church, then God might accept her; this was also what we were taught.
- Maybe, but mostly not as they expect otherwise. They may think with the dress there is more hope for her, but as for the gospel, the truth by the spirit is what convicts them of His goodness. They have a lot of emphases on what they say is modest, so a dress might make them more comfortable.
- A skirt certainly looks more right and modest and is appreciated by the plain person as long as it is one that covers well. Even pants would be preferable to a short skirt; low necklines would also make them uncomfortable.
- Yes, they tend to respect and trust a woman better if she is dressed in a skirt.
