Question #1: What/Who was the greatest influence that led you to being born again?
What/Who was the greatest influence that led you to being born again?
- A former Amish man, Paul Coblentz, shared the gospel with me many times - while I was Amish and after I left the Amish. Paul himself was born again and then excommunicated from the Amish church.
- I attended a local revival led by a Mennonite evangelist; he grew up Amish and was somewhat received in the community since the ladies in his family wore small head coverings. We were begrudgingly allowed to go, and he was the first Spirit filled preacher I had ever heard. For the first time, I experienced the conviction of Holy Spirit and the need for salvation.
- Jesus
- My husband, Emanuel.
- Moody Bible Radio. Also, I was fortunate enough to have born again grandparents. (I am actually still Amish; my husband and I decided to stay to try to help make changes, and many are being made! In the past months, we have been able to help start a new gospel teaching Amish church, and its going very well!)
- Answered Prayers
- Older Sister
- I would say I was born again at age eleven, but what we call our "spiritual awakening" was after a man prayed for my husband to experience healing from his Lyme's disease, and he got healed. It was a miracle, and the man pointed out how healing is included in the atonement, which got us to search the Word. We did what the speaker recommended and looked everything up in the Word; our world as we knew it was forever changed. The Bible became alive, and Jesus became very real.
- Oldest brother Jonas, who already left the Amish.
- The scriptures and my God given curiosity and deep yearning for answers.
- Heart disease, a fear of death, and a non-Amish lady who asked questions, which caused me to search the Bible for answers.
- Prayers of English friends who understood where I was at. Also a study on the book of Romans in the English language.
- The Bible.
- My desire to know God led me to commit my life to Him without anyone else’s influence.
- The Bible; Jesus found me and touched me, and this was the first time I could hear him speak to me.
- Audio sermons by Michael Pearl.
- Reading the Bible.
- Support from other already born-again believers as well as conviction from the Holy Spirit. After seeking what’s right for years, it just felt right when the Truth was spoken to me at a Non-Denominational church.
- English Christian neighbors who were "real" in their walk with God. I saw that they were not living in sin and that the peace of God ruled their lives.
- After leaving the Amish, I lived an unchurched and ungodly lifestyle for twenty-five years or so. In the back of my mind, I always knew who God was. I started listening to the radio owned by Calvary Chapel locally where I live; the late Chuck Smith is who I will say was my biggest influence at the beginning of my coming to Christ.
- My brother Melvin Schrock influenced me and led me to the Lord.
- The Holy Spirit.
- My wife and my pastor.
- I have many, but I could tell, at that time, who was real and who was not. Also, God would allow outward manifestations in my life to confirm to me that He was with me. Example: God shook our house while Amish preachers were questioning me of my conversion. (Acts 4:31)
- A good English friend got killed in a car accident; I went to his funeral and for the first time ever heard a message that was in a language that I understand, which caused me to realize that I was totally lost.
- A friend of a friend who had left the Amish.
- An ex-Amish driver witnessed to my Husband, who in return witnessed to me.
- My parents and grandparents.
- By getting an English version of the Bible instead of German.
- The Bible.
- Reading a children's Bible story book.
- Sunday school.
- Born again believers.
- Our Pastor, Mark White.
- A Pastor and his wife where I went to Church at and the Christian couple I lived with at the time.
- Seeing on the front of a Motor Home: Ephesians 2:8-9. I went home to see what the scripture said, and that was when I saw the light and truth that Salvation is not earned by works.
- The booklet "Christ in the early Anabaptist" by Denny Keneston.
- I started asking if this is really the way God wants his church to be run.
- My Brother, Andy J Miller.
- Watching English pastors on tv while in a motel on vacation. I was an avid reader of the Bible, and the Bible did not match up with the Amish dogma.
- First, I decided that I believed in God, and then shortly thereafter, a boyfriend invited me to ask Jesus into my heart, so I did that. After that, Jesus opened mine eyes.
- My mother.
- My sister and brother-in-law.
- A Baptist Pastor.
- A Baptist preacher that knew what it meant to be born again! He answered a question I had been asking for the previous fifteen years: How could I know for sure that I will go to heaven when I die? You see, he knew it wasn't what important what I prayed but more so, what I believed! It was all about what He Jesus did over 2,000 years ago and not what I did today!
- Two English Christian friends/taxi drivers.
- Jesus
- The mail box club when I was growing up.
- Billy Graham
- MAP Ministry, as well as a group of local friend.
- The person who helped me most to grow spiritually and understand grace was our Christian therapist. Reading the Bible in versions other than the King James version opened my eyes to many things in Scripture that I had no idea were there (Remember the level of education needed to understand the King James version is about 12th grade and the plain people normally only have an 8th grade education.)
- My Pastor
- The books by Neil Anderson, "The Bondage Breaker" and "Grace that breaks the chains."
- A TV evangelist that was on while I was remodeling a kitchen, and non-Amish Christ followers influence.
- I heard the True Gospel at a "Take Back Your Life" Conference presented by Door of Hope Ministries.
- I really wanted to live for God and was a Christian as a Mennonite, but since the messages we heard also included an emphasis on works, it was not until I heard a Christian counselor explain grace, that the truth became much clearer and God more personal.
- My mom's example and unconditional love of family.
