I am Moses Shetler. I'm 20 years old. I was born & raised Amish in upstate New York.

When I was 18 years old I left the Amish to have more fun and live my life however I wanted to. I always thought English have more fun and when I hung out with my English friends I always felt happier. In the Amish, I was at the age to get baptized and I didn't want to be baptized Amish so I left.

After a few months out here, I realized that there is more to life than just running around and making bad decisions plus I missed my family. So I started going to church with friends so I wouldn't be home alone. David Mast gave me an English Bible but I didn't want to read it because I was afraid the Bible would make me feel guilty for how I was living. I didn't understand church at first but after a few weeks I asked my friends about God.

Eventually, I started reading the Bible and discovered things I never knew when I was Amish. I learned that just living by strict rules is not the way to heaven.

A friend showed me Bible verses about getting saved like, we are not saved by works but by God's mercy. Then I prayed the sinner's prayer. God saved me. Today, I want to get baptized so everyone can see I am a true believer in God.

We "English" must keep in mind that being in the world does not permit us to engage in sin and vice. Perhaps it might seem exciting for a while, but it loses its glamour pretty quickly. We will still be tempted to sin, but prayer is poweful. Authentic Christianity means allowing God to guide us (Prov. 3:6) and to be a joy-filled Christian, and not a fire and brimstone joyless drone. We must talk to God like a dear friend and father, and have a one on one relationship with him to find TRUE happiness. I'm a Catholic Christian myself, but you must ask God where He wants you to be among fellow Christians. He will guide you to your spiritual home, and take it seriously- as St. Paul said, "We are not to forsake the assembly." Among other believers, we will find a true joy, an authentic one, absent from legalism and a condemning attitude. God Bless You in your journey!
