Former Amish man honored for volunteer driving

In the first nine months of this year, Ken Hershberger volunteered 422 hours to drive more than 1,200 veterans a total of 15,733 miles to their doctor appointments.

Three days a week, the 81-year-old wakes up before sunrise, arrives at the Roseburg Veterans Affairs Medical Center by 4:30 a.m. and loads his van with eight to 10 veterans. Hershberger and his passengers then head to Eugene, where the veterans either have doctor appointments or catch another van to Portland. Then, Hershberger heads back to the VA with an empty van.
